There are four steps to learning and growth. You may have to read this more than once, as it will make you think.

Step one: UNCONSCIENCE INCOMPETENCE. This means that you don’t even know that you don’t know.
Step two: CONSCIENCE INCOMPETENCE. This means that you have become aware that you don’t know.
Step three: CONSCIENCE COMPETENCE. This means that now you know, but you have to think about it.
Step four: UNCONSCIENCE COMPETENCE. This means that now you know and you don’t even have to think about it.

As an example, a few years ago my son was getting married. My wife and I decided that we wanted to learn ballroom dancing so we would not look so bad during the Father/Bride and Mother/Son dance. Step one was acknowledging that I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. Step two, I had to look at my feet and most of the time they went the opposite of what I was thinking. Step Three, I knew which way my feet had to go, I had to think about it, and usually they went the way I told them to go. And finally, step four, I got to the point where I didn’t have to think about where they were going. We just glided across the dance floor.

We attended Fred Astaire Dance School for a year prior to the wedding, costing about $3,000.00. We glided across the dance floor for at least 3 minutes each. You do the math but it was worth it.

These same learning principles apply to business whenever you get out of your comfort zone and start learning something new. Hopefully, at the urging of your coach. Just stick with it knowing that you will eventually become UNCONSCIENCELY COMPETENT.
